Protecting children online is no longer just about digital awareness, it is about ensuring that no child, especially children with special needs, is left behind in the effort to build safer digital spaces.
Children with special needs often face unique vulnerabilities in online environments, yet their protection is not always fully reflected in mainstream digital safety conversations. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how people interact online, the need for inclusive, responsive, and coordinated child protection systems has become more urgent than ever.
Last week, at the Assemblies of God Conference Hall in Ridge,Accra, Ghana Internet Safety Foundation (GISF) and its partners convened educators, child protection stakeholders,
digital rights advocates, safeguarding professionals, and cybersecurity experts for the Safe & Included Training of Trainers (ToT), held as part of the hashtag#iLearn2Teach series.The training created a space for deep learning and practical engagement, covering topics such as digital citizenship in the age of AI, AI-enabled risks affecting children online, survivorcentred approaches to child protection, and practical strategies for responding to Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
(OCSEA). Participants also engaged in panel discussions and breakout sessions focused on strengthening the roles of parents, schools, teachers, and communities in building safer digital ecosystems for children.
Across every session, one message remained clear: protecting children online requires more than awareness, it requires
collaboration, action, and sustained commitment to inclusion.
We are grateful to our facilitators, partners, and participants for their expertise, time, and meaningful contributions to this important dialogue. Together, we continue to move from awareness to action in strengthening child online safety systems.
