Build Healthy Habits for Life Online and Offline

Technology should make life better, not leave us tired, anxious or disconnected. Digital wellbeing means using phones and screens in a way that supports your health, sleep, relationships and learning.

WHY IT MATTERS

Endless scrolling, late-night phone use and constant comparison with others online can affect sleep, concentration, mood and self-esteem. Many apps are designed to keep us using them for as long as possible.

The World Health Organization advises no sedentary screen time for children under two, and no more than one hour a day for children aged two to four. For older children and adults, what matters most is balance: enough sleep, physical activity, time with family and friends, and screen use that adds value.

Tips

For young people

  • Turn off notifications you don’t need, and put your phone away while studying.
  • Keep phones out of the bedroom at night. Good sleep helps your mood and your grades.
  • Remember that people only post their best moments. Don’t compare your real life to someone’s highlights.
  • Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad about yourself.
  • Make time every day for things away from screens: sport, friends, faith, family and rest.

For parents & guardians

  • Agree screen-free times and places as a family, such as meals and bedtime.
  • Be a role model. Children copy how adults use their phones.
  • Look out for changes in sleep, mood, eating or school work, and talk about them gently.
  • Use built-in tools such as Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing to see and set limits together.

For teachers

  • Build short screen breaks and movement into lessons that use devices.
  • Talk with learners about how apps are designed to hold attention.
  • Refer learners who seem withdrawn or distressed to your school’s counsellor.
