The Ghana Internet Safety Foundation (GISF) proudly joined the global community in commemorating Safer Internet Day 2024, reaffirming its commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive, and responsible digital environment for children, young people, and families across Ghana.

Observed annually in over 180 countries, Safer Internet Day encourages individuals, schools, organizations, and governments to work together in promoting positive online experiences while addressing the challenges that come with today’s digital world.

Promoting Responsible Digital Citizenship

As internet access continues to expand, digital literacy has become an essential life skill. While technology provides incredible opportunities for learning, communication, and innovation, it also presents risks such as cyberbullying, misinformation, online scams, privacy breaches, and harmful content.

Through a series of awareness activities, GISF encouraged students, parents, educators, and community members to become responsible digital citizens by:

  • Practicing respectful online communication
  • Protecting personal information and privacy
  • Thinking critically before sharing online content
  • Reporting harmful or abusive online behavior
  • Supporting others who experience online harassment

These simple actions contribute to building safer digital communities for everyone.

Community Engagement and Education

As part of the celebration, GISF partnered with schools and community organizations to deliver educational presentations, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations on internet safety.

Students participated in engaging sessions covering topics such as cyberbullying prevention, safe social media use, password security, recognizing online scams, and maintaining healthy digital habits. Parents and teachers also received practical guidance on supporting children as they navigate the digital world.

The activities emphasized that online safety is a shared responsibility involving families, educators, technology providers, and policymakers.

Building a Safer Digital Future

At GISF, we believe that education remains one of the most effective tools for preventing online harm. By equipping children and young people with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions online, we help them maximize the opportunities technology offers while minimizing potential risks.

The Foundation will continue working with schools, government agencies, civil society organizations, and industry partners to strengthen digital literacy and child online protection initiatives throughout Ghana.

Moving Forward Together

Safer Internet Day serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in creating a positive online environment. Whether at home, in the classroom, or within the community, small actions can make a meaningful difference.

GISF remains dedicated to promoting safe, responsible, and positive internet use through education, advocacy, research, and collaboration. Together, we can empower the next generation to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
