The Ghana Internet Safety Foundation (GISF) recently conducted a cyberbullying awareness program for students in Kumasi as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting safe and responsible internet use among young people.
The interactive training brought together students from several schools to learn about the realities of cyberbullying, the importance of digital responsibility, and practical ways to stay safe online. As children and teenagers spend more time using social media, messaging apps, and online learning platforms, understanding how to navigate digital spaces safely has become increasingly important.
Understanding Cyberbullying
During the session, GISF facilitators explained what cyberbullying is, how it differs from traditional bullying, and the lasting emotional and psychological effects it can have on victims.
Students explored common examples of cyberbullying, including:
- Harassing or threatening messages
- Spreading false information online
- Sharing embarrassing photos or videos without permission
- Excluding others from online groups
- Creating fake accounts to impersonate someone
The discussion emphasized that online actions have real-world consequences and encouraged students to think carefully before posting or sharing content.
Encouraging Responsible Digital Citizenship
Beyond identifying online risks, the program focused on promoting positive digital behavior. Students learned the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, protecting their personal information, and reporting harmful online behavior to trusted adults or school authorities.
Interactive group activities allowed participants to discuss real-life scenarios and practice making safe decisions in different online situations.
Building Safer School Communities
Teachers who attended the workshop also received guidance on recognizing signs of cyberbullying and creating supportive environments where students feel comfortable reporting concerns.
By involving both students and educators, GISF aims to strengthen the culture of online safety within schools and encourage open conversations about responsible internet use.
Looking Ahead
Cyberbullying remains one of the most significant challenges facing young internet users today. Through educational initiatives like this, the Ghana Internet Safety Foundation continues to empower children with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate the digital world safely.
GISF remains committed to expanding cyber safety education across Ghana by partnering with schools, communities, parents, and stakeholders to promote a safer digital future for every child.
